So, what’s with the name?

In the early 1900s, a cook named Joseph “Sloppy Joe” Hayden worked at a bar in Havana, Cuba. He created a sandwich made with a ground beef filling simmered in a sweet and tangy sauce, served on a bun. The sandwich became so popular that it quickly spread to the United States, where it became a staple of diners and lunch counters across the country.

Sloppy Joe Recipe

In the meantime, when you’re craving a homemade Sloppy Joe, here’s a recipe you can enjoy!

Ingredients

  • 1 pound of ground beef
  • One chopped red onion
  • 1/4 teaspoon of paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon of cumin
  • 1/2 teaspoon of chili powder
  • Three cloves of minced garlic
  • 1/4 teaspoon of dried oregano
  • 1 red bell pepper, chopped
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 cup tomato sauce
  • 1/2 cup ketchup
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 4 hamburger buns

Instructions

  • In a large skillet over medium heat, brown the ground beef until it’s no longer pink. Drain any excess grease.
  • Add the onion, red pepper, and garlic to the skillet and cook until the vegetables are tender, about 5 minutes.
  • Stir in the cumin, chili powder, paprika, oregano, salt, and black pepper and cook for 1-2 minutes.
  • In a separate bowl, whisk together the tomato sauce, ketchup, brown sugar, vinegar, and Worcestershire sauce.
  • Pour the sauce over the beef and vegetables and stir to combine.
  • Reduce heat to low and let the mixture simmer for 10-15 minutes, until it’s thick and heated through.
  • Serve the Sloppy Joe mixture on hamburger buns and enjoy!
